Nordic Climate Day is a joint initiative by the education ministers and is designed to provide a boost to the teaching of climate issues in the Region and to promote co-operation between teachers and students in the different countries. 

How can we get youngsters to engage with the climate debate?

It is a popular question right now and one answer is the new Nordic Council of Ministers website klimanorden.org.  Designed to enhance climate teaching in the Region, the site and has been launched in the run-up to Nordic Climate Day on 11 November 2009.

Probably the biggest lesson ever conducted by SMS will be held on Climate Day. It consists of a Nordic Climate Mission, which will bring together youngster from across the Region to present their visions of how best and most creatively to draw attention to climate problems through audio, movies, images, etc. They will also answer a series of questions about the climate and about environmental issues – two of the Nordic Council of Ministers' absolute top priorities.

"It's important to get youngsters involved in climate issues as early as possible because they are the ones who will inherit the problems and also the ones, who will have to find future solutions. Nordic Climate Day is our way of making a major impact on climate teaching in the Region," commented Halldór Ásgrímsson, the Secretary General of the Nordic Council of Ministers.

Partners and participants in both the competition and Climate Day can upload their contributions to an interactive map that will serve as a comprehensive knowledge base of work on climate teaching in the Nordic and Baltic countries.
